Ever been in a sports car when all 4 cylinders fired with perfect timing? Ya' never forgot that ride, did ya'? You won't forget this one either. Moring and company make you feel this music's intention; they drive and you don't forget.
—Gary Walker, WBGO
Way Out East celebrates the progressive improvisational
techniques of artists like Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus and Miles
Davis in chordless arrangements in a tight knit quartet setting.
Strangely enough, Moring and friends never really meant for Way
Out East to be a complete album. It was just a bunch of mutual admirers
gathering together for a jam session with the tape rolling. Before
they knew it, they had nearly an hour of recorded material that
was blazing with creativity, generous in sound and remarkably fl uid in
compositional style. It was jazz as it was meant to be – totally
free of critical judgment and perfectly turned on to the moment.
Bill Moring (bass), Jack Walrath (trumpet), Tim
Armacost (tenor
saxophone) and Steve Johns (drums)
